Former military head of state, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has finally confirmed that the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola won the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.
This revelation was made in Babangida’s autobiography, “A Journey in Service”, launched on Thursday in Abuja.
Through the book’s reviewer, former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Babangida acknowledged that Abiola, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, secured the majority of votes and met all constitutional requirements to be declared president.
“There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements,” Babangida stated, describing the annulment as the most difficult decision of his life.
He expressed relief that former President Muhammadu Buhari posthumously honoured Abiola with Nigeria’s highest national title, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), typically reserved for presidents.
