IBADAN — With just days to the August 16 bye-election in Ibadan North Federal Constituency, five candidates vying for the seat have signed a peace accord, pledging to ensure a violence-free and credible poll.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday at the Oyo State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ibadan, in the presence of political party leaders, security chiefs, and other stakeholders.
Those who signed include Dexter Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Adewale Haastrup Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Olabisi Olajumoke Odususi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Fola Sunday Oyekunle of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Hammed Badmus of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
The bye-election follows the death of Hon. Musliudeen Olaide Akinremi, the former occupant of the seat, who passed away last year at the age of 51.
Speaking at the event, Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Adeniran Rahmon Tella, said the peace accord was vital to guaranteeing a free, fair, and transparent election.
“This gathering demonstrates your commitment to promoting peace, stability, and credibility in the electoral process,” he stated. “The signing of this Peace Accord is a crucial step towards ensuring a free, fair, and transparent election. I urge all stakeholders to adhere to the principles outlined and create an environment where voters can exercise their rights without fear or intimidation.”
The Ibadan North bye-election is expected to be closely contested, with heightened interest following the constituency’s political significance in Oyo State.
