Former Governor of Abia State and current Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has claimed that he spent his personal funds to govern the state during his tenure and received no financial gain from holding public office.
Speaking on Politics Today, a political programme aired on Channels Television on Monday, Kalu stated that instead of benefiting from political office, he incurred significant financial losses during and after his time as governor.
“I spent my own money being governor, just like I’m spending my money today as a senator. I used to finance the state,” Kalu said.
He further alleged that the federal government under former President Olusegun Obasanjo targeted him and seized many of his business interests, which led to a substantial financial downturn for him personally.
“The federal government took a lot of my businesses. So for me, politics had been more dangerous under the Obasanjo federal government at the time,” he added.
Kalu, who governed Abia State from 1999 to 2007, has consistently maintained that his foray into politics was motivated by service rather than personal gain. His recent remarks come amid ongoing debates about the cost of governance and the financial integrity of Nigerian politicians.
