Former Governor of Abia State and current senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has disclosed that he donated over $1 million to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and contributed N500 million to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its inception in 1998.

Kalu made the revelation on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he spoke on the evolution of Nigerian politics and the need for unity among political stakeholders.

“At the time, the dollar was worth about ₦84. I gave President Olusegun Obasanjo over $1 million. I also gave the PDP more than ₦500 million to start the party,” Kalu stated.

According to the senator, few individuals at the time had the financial capacity to support the formation of the PDP, naming TY Danjuma and Atiku Abubakar as the only other persons who could contribute meaningfully.

He emphasized that political attacks and name-calling among leaders serve no purpose, urging politicians across party lines to focus on addressing the needs of ordinary Nigerians.

“All this abusing Tinubu, Orji Kalu, Atiku Abubakar, Amaechi — it should stop. We should sit down as a family and talk about what Nigerians need and how to deliver it,” he said.

Kalu stressed his concern for the welfare of Nigerians, noting that he is more interested in seeing citizens enjoy the basics of life.

“I’m more anxious to see Nigerians eating three meals a day, using good roads, going to functional train stations, working in decent factories, and making honest income. That’s what truly matters,” he added.

His comments come amid growing public discourse on political accountability and the historical foundations of Nigeria’s current political elite.
