Abuja – The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to compel Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to immediately block all websites hosting obscene and pornographic content in Nigeria.
The directive followed the adoption of a motion titled “Need to Block Internet Websites Hosting Pornographic Content and Sanction Defaulting Internet Service Providers (ISPs),” sponsored by Rep. Dalhatu Tafoki during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Tafoki raised concerns over the widespread availability of explicit content online, emphasizing that no significant measures had been taken to curb its spread. He highlighted Nigeria’s strong religious and moral values, noting that major faiths in the country condemn indecent exposure and immoral content.
Citing global precedents, he referenced several countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East that have enacted strict laws restricting access to such material. He also pointed out expert warnings from psychologists and sociologists regarding the harmful effects of explicit content on individuals’ mental and social well-being.
“Some immediate consequences of consuming pornographic content include deception in marriage, which can destabilize family life, the promotion of adultery and prostitution, and unrealistic expectations that may lead to risky promiscuous behavior,” Tafoki stated.
In response, the House mandated the NCC to enforce the Nigerian Communications Act and the National Information Technology Development Act against any ISP that fails to comply. Additionally, its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance have been tasked with overseeing the implementation and are expected to report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
