The House of Representatives has advanced a series of constitutional amendment bills, with 32 proposals passing the second reading on Thursday. Among them is a bill seeking to establish the Office of the Prime Minister as head of government, while the President retains the role of head of state. The bill also outlines the framework for electing individuals to both positions.
Also under consideration is a bill to allocate specific legislative seats to women in the National Assembly and state houses of assembly, aimed at enhancing gender representation in governance.
Another key amendment seeks to expedite the resolution of pre-election petitions by reducing the adjudication period, establishing pre-election tribunals, and regulating the suspension of National Assembly members from legislative duties.
The House also approved the second reading of a bill proposing a review of eligibility criteria for presidential, gubernatorial, and vice-presidential candidates.
In addition, lawmakers debated a bill addressing the electoral role of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in presidential elections. Proposals for the creation of Wan State and Gobir State also moved forward in the legislative process.
So far, 113 constitutional amendment bills have successfully passed second reading, marking a significant step in the ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s governance framework.
