Six people have been sentenced to prison by the Federal High Court for scamming Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye, the former speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, of N38 million and posting his nude video online.
On Tuesday in Osogbo, Justice Emmanuel Ayoola imposed the sentence after finding the defendants guilty of conspiracy, advance fee fraud, and cyberstalking the former lawmaker. Kazeem Agbabiaka, Femi Oyebode, Adebiyi Kehinde, Abdul-Rasheed Ojonla Babatunde Oluajo, and Ismaila Azeez are the ones found guilty.
According to Justice Ayoola, the prisoners tricked the lawmaker and posted his nude photos online. A picture of Owoeye, who served as the state Assembly representative for Ilesha East, in his underwear went viral on the internet in 2018.
The story in the widely shared video claims that Owoeye was discovered taking a blood bath. They said that the politician took part in the ceremonial bath to win the general election of 2019.
Before their transfer to the Federal High Court on October 19, 2018, the convicted individuals were detained and arraigned before a magistrate court. The prosecution, under the direction of Moses Faremi, assistant director of public prosecution, presented 57 exhibits during the trial.
A flash drive, a compact disc, a wooden box, a $100 note, a gun, and bank statements from the three commercial banks where the money was received were among the exhibits.
The defence team asked the judge to exercise mercy in their allocates, pointing out that the guilty men were family men and first-time offenders.
Each of the guilty was given a five-year prison sentence by the judge.
