Hackers Target NBS Website Just After Release of Shocking Crime Report

0

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has confirmed that its website was hacked on Wednesday, urging the public to disregard any information published on the site until further notice. The agency made the announcement via a post on X, stating that they are working to restore the website.

“This is to inform the public that the NBS Website has been hacked and we are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you,” NBS wrote.

This cyberattack comes just one day after the NBS published its highly anticipated Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report, which revealed alarming statistics about crime in Nigeria. According to the report, Nigerians paid a staggering N2.23 trillion as ransom between May 2023 and April 2024.

The survey also found that an estimated 51.89 million crime incidents were recorded across Nigerian households during this period. The north-west region saw the highest number of reported crime incidents, with over 14 million cases, while the south-east region recorded the lowest, with just over six million incidents.

Additionally, the report highlighted that rural areas experienced a higher incidence of crime (26,526,069 cases) compared to urban areas, which recorded 25,360,963 cases.

As NBS works to recover its compromised website, Nigerians are urged to be cautious and await official updates directly from the agency.
