At least five people have been confirmed dead, and over 50 others injured following a gunpowder explosion at the Talata Mafara market in Zamfara State on Tuesday.

The blast, which occurred around 3:45 p.m., sent shockwaves through the busy weekly market, leaving traders and shoppers in panic. Eyewitnesses say the explosion originated near a blacksmith’s shop, sparking a fire that engulfed nearby stalls.

“I was very lucky—I had just left the area when I heard the explosion, and then fire broke out,” said Muhammad Aliyu, a witness at the scene.

Emergency responders rushed the injured to Talata Mafara General Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Meanwhile, authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
