NUUK – Greenland’s caretaker government has announced that it will not hold talks with a high-level U.S. delegation set to visit later this week, citing concerns over American intentions toward the Arctic territory.
Prime Minister Múte Egede confirmed the decision in a Facebook post on Monday, emphasizing that the visit could not be regarded as purely private.
Usha Vance, wife of U.S. Vice President JD Vance, is scheduled to arrive in Greenland on Thursday alongside National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Their visit comes amid renewed scrutiny of U.S. interest in Greenland, particularly regarding its strategic minerals and geopolitical significance.
The move echoes past tensions sparked by former President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to purchase Greenland. The suggestion was widely rejected by Greenlanders, and Denmark has since reiterated that any decision regarding the island’s future must be made by its own people.
The U.S. delegation has not yet commented on the Greenlandic government’s decision.
