In response to recent media reports, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has addressed claims surrounding the appointment of his daughter, Mrs. Helen Obareki, as the First Lady of the state following the passing of his wife, Mrs. Patience Umo Eno, on September 26, 2024.
During a condolence visit by Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, Governor Eno clarified that while his daughter will coordinate the activities of the Office of the First Lady, she has not been appointed as the First Lady herself. Mrs. Obareki had previously served as her mother’s Special Assistant, making her well-suited to continue the work of the office during this difficult time.
Speaking at All Nations Christian Ministry Intl in Eket, the governor explained that having his daughter coordinate the office was a decision rooted in family healing and continuity, rather than political motives. He emphasized that First Ladies are not appointed positions, but rather roles that naturally align with the governor’s office.
“I want to make it clear: First Ladies are not appointed. The position comes naturally with the governor,” Eno said. “Our daughter, Mrs. Helen Obareki, has been with her mother from the start, and is the most qualified to coordinate the programs of the Office of the First Lady. This is not a political appointment but a necessary continuation of the work.”
Governor Eno further expressed that keeping his late wife’s initiatives, such as the “Golden Initiative For All” (GIFA), alive is a priority. The pet project, which focuses on supporting women, the elderly, and the less privileged, can only thrive under the guidance of someone with Obareki’s experience, education, and close relationship with the governor.
He reassured the public that appointing his daughter as coordinator is in the best interest of the state, highlighting the importance of maintaining the momentum of his wife’s humanitarian programs.
“The Office of the First Lady has responsibilities to the women of Akwa Ibom, and those responsibilities will not die. We need someone who is close enough to me to ensure that the office runs smoothly, and that person is my daughter,” Eno said.
The governor also took the opportunity to thank Mrs. Tinubu for her timely visit and her support in acknowledging the continuity of his wife’s legacy. He concluded by expressing his gratitude to the church and all those who offered their condolences, urging them to find comfort in their faith during this period of grief.
