Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has called on the South East Development Commission (SEDC) to focus on impactful projects that will accelerate growth in the region.

Governor Nwifuru made the appeal on Tuesday while receiving members of the commission at his office in Centenary City, Abakaliki. He emphasized that the establishment of SEDC by the Federal Government represents the realization of a long-held aspiration of South East leaders and residents.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, the governor urged commission members to avoid distractions and work diligently to justify the trust placed in them.

“Do not engage in frivolities. Now, the development of the South East is in your hands. Do not look to the governors because we have our individual and state interests,” Nwifuru said. “Look beyond where you are coming from and strive to leave legacies that will speak volumes about who you are.”

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing the commission and expressed confidence in the expertise of its appointees. He also urged South East governors to support SEDC by fostering a conducive environment for development.

Speaking on behalf of the commission, SEDC’s Managing Director, Mark Okoye, represented by the Executive Director of Commerce and Industrial Development, Senator Anthony Agbo, outlined the commission’s vision. He highlighted plans to collaborate with states in the region to harmonize policies, pool resources, and establish a strong asset base.

“SEDC has outlined strategic objectives, including working with South East states to achieve a $200 billion economy by 2025 and spearheading transformative projects in infrastructure, energy, technology, and ease of doing business,” Agbo stated.

Chairman of SEDC, Dr. Emeka Wogu, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to bridging the region’s development gaps and positioning it for sustainable progress.
