Governor Fubara Moves to Reunify Rivers State University Campuses

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has revealed plans to consolidate all campuses of the Rivers State University (RSU) back to its main campus in Port Harcourt.

Speaking at the Government House on Tuesday while receiving a delegation of Kalabari traditional rulers, Governor Fubara criticized his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, for decentralizing the institution, arguing that the additional campuses lack a sustainable framework.

The previous administration had established new RSU campuses in Emohua, Ahoada, and Etche, citing the need to spread development across the state. However, not much has been heard about the progress of these campuses in recent times.

Governor Fubara stated that a memo recommending the consolidation of these campuses is already before him, signaling a possible policy reversal.

“It is not just about creating a tertiary institution; it has to be one that, while receiving government support, can also attract federal attention. It must be specialized to stand the test of time,” Fubara said.

He assured the Kalabari traditional rulers that their request for a higher institution in their region would be considered but emphasized that any new institution must be self-sustaining.

Fubara also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing ongoing projects and initiating new ones in the three local government areas—Degema, Asari-Toru, and Akuku-Toru—that make up the Kalabari ethnic group.
