Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Sunday officially presented the staff of office to the newly elected Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, in a ceremony marked by both celebration and controversy.

The appointment of Oba Haastrup has faced significant opposition from factions within the Bilaro Oluodo Ruling House, particularly the Ofokutu and Arimoro royal families, who have criticized the selection process. They accused the state government of manipulation and favoritism and have threatened to challenge the decision in court.

NELSDAILY reported that the protests stem from allegations that the selection process was influenced to favor Haastrup, who was elected by the kingmakers last Friday. Governor Adeleke approved the appointment later that evening.

At the presentation ceremony, Governor Adeleke extended his congratulations to Oba Haastrup, emphasizing the need for unity among the people of Ijesaland. “Now that the time of competition is over and you have become the father of all, I urge you to rally round all citizens of Ijesaland for the development of the area and the state at large,” he said.

The governor called on the new monarch to leverage his extensive experience and network for the growth of Ijesaland, urging collaborative efforts with the government to achieve sustainable development.

Highlighting his administration’s developmental projects in Ijesaland, Adeleke encouraged all sons and daughters of the region to contribute actively to their homeland’s progress.

Oba Haastrup, a former deputy governor of Osun State, served under the late Isiaka Adeleke, the first Executive Governor of Osun State and elder brother of the current governor.

Despite the tension, Governor Adeleke expressed optimism for a peaceful and prosperous reign for Oba Haastrup, praying for Ijesaland’s continued progress under his leadership.

The situation remains dynamic as the dissenting royal families pursue their grievances through legal channels.
