Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has cautioned against recent remarks by former Chief of Army Staff, General Theophilus Danjuma, who urged Nigerians to defend themselves amid the nation’s worsening security challenges.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Governor Namadi said such a call, though coming from a respected figure, could lead to lawlessness if not properly contextualized.
“He (Danjuma) is a very senior security person and should be respected. But if he says that citizens should be allowed to defend themselves, I think you are causing anarchy,” the governor said. “His words need to be analysed carefully.”
Namadi highlighted ongoing efforts by his administration to strengthen security in Jigawa State through proactive planning, expert involvement, and community engagement.
“When we assumed office, we employed several strategies and brought in experts. We also engaged traditional rulers and set up standing committees to foster communication with the people,” he said. “Now, they understand that violence is not the solution. We have not reached the point where citizens need to resort to self-defense.”
The governor also reiterated his support for the creation of State Police, describing it as a practical solution to Nigeria’s persistent security issues.
“The idea of State Police is still very much alive. Many states have expressed interest. Discussions are ongoing at the National Economic Council level, and I believe implementation will happen eventually,” Namadi added.
His remarks come amid nationwide debates on decentralizing the country’s security apparatus and addressing the alarming rise in banditry, kidnappings, and communal violence.
