A tragic tanker explosion along the Dikko-Maje route in Suleja, Niger State, has left 77 people dead and 25 others injured, plunging the nation into mourning. The incident, which has been described as avoidable, occurred when locals reportedly rushed to the scene to scoop fuel after the tanker overturned.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, who also serves as the chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, extended heartfelt condolences to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, the Niger State Government, and its citizens. In a statement issued on behalf of the forum on Sunday, Abiodun called the incident a “soul-crushing tragedy” and urged resilience in the face of the devastating loss.
“The Southern Governors’ Forum is deeply shocked by this event. To lose 77 lives in such a horrific manner is heart-wrenching. We pray for the injured to recover quickly and for Almighty Allah to comfort the grieving families,” Abiodun stated.
The explosion highlights the urgent need for stricter traffic regulation enforcement and public awareness about the dangers of fuel scooping. “This tragedy could have been avoided,” Abiodun emphasized, urging security agencies to implement Governor Bago’s directives on enforcing traffic rules.
The Ogun State Governor also called on the Federal Government to collaborate with Niger State authorities to provide essential support for victims and their families. Additionally, he stressed the importance of nationwide efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Governor Abiodun’s remarks align with broader calls for enhanced road safety measures and improved infrastructure to prevent such accidents, which have become an all-too-common occurrence.
