Ghana’s Chief Justice Suspended

0

President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, with immediate effect and has ordered a formal investigation into multiple petitions filed against her.

The announcement was made in a statement released by the Office of the President on Tuesday. According to the statement, following consultations with the Council of State, the President concluded that a prima facie case had been established, warranting the suspension and the constitution of a committee to review the allegations.

While the nature of the petitions has not been disclosed, the Presidency assured that due process will be followed.

“The President, upon advice from the Council of State and in line with constitutional provisions, has initiated a full investigation into the petitions filed against the Chief Justice,” the statement noted.

Justice Torkornoo, appointed in June 2023 by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, is Ghana’s third female Chief Justice. She previously overcame a similar removal attempt earlier this year, after President Akufo-Addo dismissed the petition, citing procedural flaws.

As of press time, the presidency has yet to release further details on the allegations or the timeline for the committee’s investigation.
