Former Ogun State governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel, has accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of orchestrating a politically motivated plot to demolish his properties in Sagamu, describing the move as an attempt to create chaos and confusion in the state.
Speaking through his media aide, Steve Oliyide, at his Asoludero Court residence in Sagamu on Monday, Daniel alleged that the quit and demolition notices pasted on his properties were acts of persecution that flouted the 2022 Urban and Regional Planning Law of Ogun State.
According to him, the government has failed to apply the same standards to the governor’s own private residence in Iperu, which he claimed does not meet setback requirements.
“Which part of the law says that on the same day you serve a contravention notice, you must also serve a quit notice giving just three days before demolition? We have asked for the alleged contraventions, but there are none,” Daniel said.
The former governor insisted that his buildings — including the Conference Hotel and its annexe — were constructed with full government approvals and documented permits dating back to 2004.
“In a GRA of over 2,000 houses, you are only interested in Gbenga Daniel’s property. This is pure political persecution,” he maintained.
Government Responds
Reacting to the allegations, Ogun State Commissioner for Urban and Regional Planning, Mr. Tunji Odunlami, challenged Daniel to present the necessary approval documents for verification.
He explained that the enforcement exercise is part of a statewide physical planning compliance drive already carried out in Abeokuta and now extended to Sagamu and Ijebu Ode, with plans to reach Ota and Ilaro.
“The state government enforces its planning laws daily across Ogun, guided solely by the law and public interest, not by victimisation,” Odunlami stated.
He urged the senator to follow due process: “We appeal to Senator Gbenga Daniel to send a representative to the relevant office with his documents for verification and clearance.”
