The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has dismissed concerns surrounding the recent resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, describing it as a routine development that does not signal a crisis within the ruling party.
Speaking during a media interaction organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B – comprising journalists from the South-West – Basiru stated that Ganduje’s departure should not be misinterpreted as a sign of internal turmoil.
“If you look at the statement issued by the party, he was commended for the efforts he made in repositioning the party. Under his watch, we saw more states join the APC and witnessed administrative strengthening since our joint election on August 3, 2023,” he noted.
Ganduje’s resignation has sparked speculation, especially amid rumours that former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, may be considering a defection to the APC. However, Basiru dismissed such claims, insisting that the party remains united and stable.
“This is not the first time an official has resigned from the party. Remember, we assumed office following the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore. The resignation of Dr. Ganduje is not a crisis, it’s mere speculation,” he added.
He also highlighted Ganduje’s contributions to the party, noting that his tenure helped expand the APC’s presence nationwide.
Addressing political rumours in Osun State, Basiru categorically refuted claims that Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is planning to defect to the APC.
“Adeleke is not joining our party. As of today, there is no discussion or plan for him to decamp. Although the APC remains an attractive platform for any willing entrant, I must clarify as a loyal party man and supporter of Mr. President, that such talks are unfounded,” Basiru declared.
The APC chieftain reaffirmed that the party remains focused and resilient, buoyed by the leadership of dedicated members across the country.
