Funke Akindele Eyes Political Comeback, Says “Oh, Yes” to Future Contest

Popular Nigerian actress and filmmaker turned politician, Funke Akindele, has revealed plans to return to the political scene despite her earlier defeat in the 2023 Lagos governorship election.

Akindele, who ran as the deputy governorship candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alongside Abdulazeez Adediran, lost to the incumbent, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Following the loss, she deleted all political content from her social media pages and remained silent on political matters—until now.

Speaking during the inaugural live edition of the ‘WithChude’ podcast, the Nollywood star confirmed her intention to contest again.

“I need to support. I need to give back. That’s why I went into politics,” Akindele said. “Getting into it, seeing violence and shouting, then I started watching female politicians like Mummy Abike Dabiri. The way they speak and command respect and authority… I’m like, ‘You too, go. You can do it.’”

Reflecting on her political journey, Akindele highlighted the lessons she has learned, including the importance of courage and being well-informed.

“I’ve become more knowledgeable. I read more now. I understand my country and state better. When I speak, I speak with statistics and data,” she added.

When asked if she would return to politics, she responded emphatically: “Oh, yes.”

Akindele’s revelation marks a bold step in what appears to be a determined political comeback.
