Port Harcourt, June 6, 2025 — Despite facing political headwinds, suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has restated his unwavering dedication to democratic values, vowing to uphold the rule of law, protect fundamental rights, and foster inclusive governance across party lines.
In his Democracy Day message delivered on Thursday, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while promoting transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in leadership.
“Rivers State will remain a beacon of fairness and openness,” the governor said in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi. “We are determined to defend the interest of our people and stay true to the ideals of democracy.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, Fubara urged citizens and political leaders to rise above division and work together to build a society where every voice is valued, and all citizens are empowered to contribute meaningfully to national progress.
He also addressed the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, including his own suspension and that of other elected officials, describing the situation as a sobering reminder of democracy’s vulnerability and the need for collective vigilance.
“The recent developments underscore the importance of remaining steadfast in the pursuit of democratic ideals,” Fubara noted. “Our journey has been marked by both triumphs and challenges, but our resolve remains unshaken.”
He emphasized that his administration has made deliberate efforts to strengthen civil liberties, promote institutional oversight, and deepen inclusion—pillars he believes are essential for sustaining democratic governance into the future.
Acknowledging the resilience of Rivers people, Governor Fubara encouraged citizens to approach the current moment with unity, courage, and a renewed sense of purpose. “The future of our state depends on our ability to act together, innovate, and pursue our shared aspirations,” he said.
The governor also paid tribute to Nigeria’s past democratic leaders, urging citizens to honour their legacy by upholding the principles for which they stood—patriotism, justice, and civic responsibility.
“As we mark this Democracy Day, let us remain committed to building a Rivers State that is stronger, more united, and truly reflective of the will of its people,” Fubara concluded.
