In a major political development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has successfully brokered a truce in the lingering political crisis rocking Rivers State, securing a deal that reinstates Siminalayi Fubara as Governor — but with a key caveat: he will not seek re-election in 2027.
According to an exclusive report by The Cable, the high-stakes resolution was reached during a closed-door meeting held Thursday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. In attendance were President Tinubu, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, Governor Fubara, suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martin Amaewhule, and a handful of lawmakers.
Presidency insiders revealed that the agreement, aimed at restoring stability and democratic order in the oil-rich state, required significant concessions from all parties involved.
Under the terms of the deal, Governor Fubara will be allowed to complete his current four-year tenure but must relinquish any ambitions for a second term. The condition, according to sources, is intended to reduce political friction and ease tensions between Fubara and his estranged political benefactor, Wike.
In a further power-sharing compromise, Wike is reportedly set to nominate all chairpersons for the 23 local government areas (LGAs) in the state — a move that would grant him renewed influence at the grassroots level and reassert his stronghold in Rivers politics.
The agreement marks a significant step toward restoring governance and political calm in a state that has been engulfed in internal wrangling for months.
