Obelle Community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State descended into chaos on Sunday as a violent clash between rival cult groups claimed no fewer than 19 lives, forcing residents to flee for safety.
The latest bloodshed follows a similar attack last Wednesday that left seven people dead, with tensions escalating between the Deybam and Icelanders cult groups.
According to local sources, the renewed violence erupted when members of one cult group launched a retaliatory attack on the relatives of those they believed were responsible for Wednesday’s killings. The situation quickly spiraled out of control as the rival faction responded with gunfire, leading to a deadly shootout that claimed members from both sides, as well as innocent bystanders.
An eyewitness, identified as Kingsley, recounted the harrowing ordeal:
“On Sunday morning, some cultists stormed the community, attacking the families of those they suspected of involvement in the previous killings. Shortly after, their rivals arrived, and an intense exchange of gunfire ensued. Many people have been killed, including innocent residents. The shooting was so intense that people had to flee the community.”
Amid the escalating violence, terrified residents are calling on the government to intervene and restore order.
“These cult groups are tearing our community apart. We need urgent intervention from security agencies,” a distressed resident pleaded.
When contacted, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident but stated that full details were still being gathered at the time of this report.
The situation in Obelle remains tense as security agencies face increasing pressure to take decisive action against the warring cult factions.
