The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has revealed ongoing high-level discussions aimed at securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021 on charges of treason, may soon regain his freedom.
Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with the South East Legislators Forum, Kalu expressed optimism about the progress of behind-the-scenes negotiations with relevant authorities. He urged continued prayers and unity among leaders in the Southeast region, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for regional development and security.
“I am fighting for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to come out. Very soon, it will happen. Please, keep us in your prayers,” Kalu said.
He also called for an end to the disruptive sit-at-home orders in the Southeast, advocating for unity and cooperation among stakeholders. The Deputy Speaker stressed the significance of the proposed South East Development Commission (SEDC) in fostering growth and pledged support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The South East Legislators Forum, led by Kingsley Ikoro, Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, visited Kalu to pledge solidarity and seek guidance. Ikoro described Kalu as a unifying political leader for the Southeast, emphasizing the legislators’ commitment to working collectively for the region’s progress.
Kalu further urged legislators to support ongoing constitutional amendment efforts and proposed regional town hall meetings to address critical issues such as security, infrastructure, and economic growth.
