Residents of the Gashaka Local Government Area in Taraba State’s core geopolitical zone are counting their losses following heavy rain. On Sunday, the rain fell for approximately six hours, drowning some houses and washing away products worth millions of Naira. The river also carried away farm goods and domestic animals.
They have requested assistance from the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA. They also requested assistance from National Assembly members representing the zone.
Dauda Ali, who claimed that his farm had been wiped away by the flood that wrecked Serti, the administrative capital of the council, and its environs, said the flood had cut short his and other farmers’ aspirations of a bumper harvest. He bemoaned the fact that the money spent on farms had been borrowed from cooperatives and people.
Suleiman Abba, another neighbor, claimed goats and sheep were nowhere to be found since the disaster.
Some of the victims, who are taking refuge in public locations, have stated that the flood was caused by a lack of drainage in the area.
