Five Days, No Word: ADC Queries Tinubu’s Whereabouts After BRICS Meeting

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to provide a clear explanation for his unexplained absence from the country following the conclusion of the 2025 BRICS Summit in Brazil.

President Tinubu had embarked on a two-nation visit to St. Lucia and Brazil on June 28, 2025, with his itinerary culminating in attendance at the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro between July 6 and 7.

However, following the summit, the President’s whereabouts remained unknown for five days, sparking concerns and public curiosity. Tinubu returned to Nigeria in the early hours of Sunday, July 13, without any official statement or briefing on the gap in his public schedule.

Reacting in a statement issued on Sunday, the ADC, through its spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, described the President’s silent return as troubling and unacceptable.

“We extend a weary welcome to President Tinubu who finally returned to the country five days after the conclusion of the BRICS Summit in Brazil,” Abdullahi said. “Since the summit ended on Monday, July 7, other world leaders have returned to their countries, briefed their citizens, and resumed their duties. But our President reappeared in Abuja with no explanation, no briefing, and no accountability.”

The party emphasized that five days is a significant time in the life of a nation like Nigeria, which is grappling with insecurity, economic hardship, and widespread public discontent.

“President Tinubu was not on holiday. Nigerians have the right to know where he was and what national interest—if any—was being served during his extended stay abroad,” the statement added.

The ADC urged the Presidency to respect the principles of transparency and public accountability by clarifying the circumstances surrounding the President’s delayed return.
