First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding the Senate, emphasizing that the chamber should remain a place of honor and decorum rather than conflict.
Her remarks come in response to the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In a statement shared by her spokesperson, Bukola Kukoyi, on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Tinubu underscored the importance of maintaining the Senate’s integrity.
“I know with what is going on in the Senate, you may ask why I am not taking a position. I believe the Senate is doing what is necessary because that is its role,” she said.
“We shouldn’t be hearing things like this. It is a mature chamber and should be treated with respect. Simply being in that space is an honor,” she added, recalling her own 12-year tenure in the Senate.
Ahead of International Women’s Day, the First Lady also encouraged Nigerian women to assert themselves in leadership roles and refuse to be sidelined.
“Women, elevate yourselves. Don’t allow men to speak to you disrespectfully. You can always shut them down before they even start,” she advised.
Tinubu acknowledged the progress women have made over the years, citing peace advocate Zuriel Oduwole as an inspiration. She also praised Nigerian youth for their potential and urged women to continue striving for excellence.
