A fire outbreak on Friday morning gutted a building on Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, Onitsha, Anambra State, causing panic among residents and passersby.
Eyewitnesses reported that the inferno, which started in the early hours of the day, prompted swift response from men of the Anambra State Fire Service, who arrived on the scene shortly after receiving a distress call at 6:20 am.
Chukwudi Chiketa, Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, confirmed the incident in a brief statement, assuring the public that the situation was under control.
“Anambra State Fire Service is currently on intervention at the scene of the fire outbreak at Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, Onitsha. The distress call came at 06:20 am today, and our firefighters deployed immediately,” Chiketa said.
He called on residents and members of the public to remain calm as firefighters continue efforts to completely extinguish the blaze and prevent further damage.
Meanwhile, locals and concerned passersby have been seen making efforts to salvage properties and goods from the affected building. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.
