A late evening fire on Sunday gutted an abandoned two-storey building at Block 131, D Block, Alaka Estate, Iponri, Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred around 9 p.m., fortunately resulted in no loss of life. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, along with the Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), quickly contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to neighboring apartments.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osayintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed that no lives were lost in the fire.
The blaze affected the top floor of the building, which consists of six flats. It was revealed that the building, which has been abandoned for three years, is sinking and in an unstable state.
“The building was extensively damaged, and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Fortunately, there have been no casualties or injuries,” said Oke-Osayintolu. “The fire was completely extinguished through the prompt intervention of emergency responders, and the affected building has been cordoned off.”
Following the incident, residents were educated about the dangers associated with the sinking building and its potential hazards.
