London, UK – Heathrow Airport, Europe’s busiest gateway, has been forced to shut down following a major power outage caused by a fire at an electrical substation. The closure, which will last until 11:59 PM on March 21, has thrown travel plans into chaos for tens of thousands of passengers.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed the incident, stating that crews are working tirelessly to contain the fire and restore normalcy.
“This is a highly visible and significant incident, and our firefighters are working under challenging conditions to bring the fire under control as swiftly as possible,” said Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne.
The power failure has impacted homes and businesses in the area, prompting authorities to impose a 200-metre safety cordon and evacuate around 150 people. Firefighters have also led 29 individuals to safety from nearby properties.
In a statement on X, Heathrow Airport urged passengers not to travel to the airport and to contact their airlines for updates.
“We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate passengers’ patience as we work to resolve this issue,” the airport said.
Emergency teams and airport authorities are collaborating to minimise disruption and restore power as quickly as possible.
