The Federal Government, in collaboration with key stakeholders, is set to roll out the “Proof of Address System Initiative” across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, aiming to enhance national security and foster economic development.

This announcement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, represented by Dr. Nnamdi Mbaeri, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office.

Akume highlighted that Nigeria faces persistent challenges, including insecurity, social vices, economic instability, and inefficiencies in governance. The new initiative aims to address these issues by providing residents with secure and verifiable addresses.

A Game-Changer for National Security and Governance
Describing the project as transformative, Akume emphasized its potential to strengthen security, streamline government operations, and drive economic growth.

“This initiative reflects President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to tackling the nation’s challenges and laying the groundwork for a safer, more efficient, and prosperous Nigeria,” he stated.

Akume also called on Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to adopt proof of address certificates issued by local governments, asserting that the absence of a reliable address system has hindered efforts to combat crime, secure communities, and plan for sustainable development.

Building Stronger Local Governments
Mr. Bello Lawal, National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), underscored the project’s importance for social inclusion and grassroots development. Represented by Mr. Akala Samuel, Lawal described the initiative as a significant step toward improving accountability, strengthening community security, and positioning local governments for global socio-economic relevance.

“This project is more than an administrative tool—it’s a foundation for building stronger, more collaborative communities,” he said.

Key Impacts and National Vision
The proof of address system is aligned with the federal government’s efforts to establish a comprehensive national social register. It is expected to address pressing social challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality while promoting efficient governance and economic stability.

With its far-reaching implications, the Proof of Address System Initiative marks a critical turning point in Nigeria’s pursuit of national security, social inclusion, and economic advancement.
