A certified true copy (CTC) of the death certificate of Ahmed Gulak, former Special Adviser on Political Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, was on Wednesday admitted as evidence in the ongoing terrorism trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The document was tendered by a Federal Government witness identified as BBB, who appeared as the second prosecution witness (PW-2) before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Led in evidence by the Federal Government’s counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, the witness confirmed that Gulak was allegedly killed by suspected IPOB members in Owerri, Imo State, in 2021.

Although the day’s proceeding was initially scheduled for cross-examination, Awomolo sought the court’s permission to ask an additional question. Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, did not object, prompting the court to grant the request.

Awomolo asked the witness to clarify earlier testimony that during one of Kanu’s radio broadcasts, he allegedly called for a sit-at-home order, which led to the killing of Gulak. The witness affirmed the claim and added that he had participated in the investigation surrounding the incident.

He also presented the death certificate dated July 18, 2021, issued by the Nigeria Police, Owerri, as a certified medical report on Gulak’s death. The document was admitted in evidence and marked as Exhibit PWJ.

Following court approval, the witness read the contents of the certificate aloud in open court, affirming that Gulak was shot dead in Imo State by suspected IPOB operatives.

Afterward, Chief Agabi commenced cross-examination of the witness as the trial continued.
