The Federal Government has given Infiouest Construction Company a 14-month ultimatum to complete the reconstruction of Section II of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria Expressway, a critical part of the N777 billion infrastructure project aimed at boosting connectivity and reducing travel hazards in Northern Nigeria.

Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, disclosed this during the official flag-off ceremony held at Jere, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The project, previously handled by Julius Berger Plc, was re-awarded to Infiouest Construction Company at a cost of N525 billion following contractual disagreements over cost variations.

Section II of the expressway will be built with concrete-reinforced pavement, a move Umahi said will ensure durability and quicker delivery.

“The Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road spans 700 kilometres and is vital to our national road network. Its reconstruction will significantly reduce traffic congestion and accident rates,” Umahi stated.

He praised Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for his unwavering support, noting that “under his leadership and the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, this critical route will be fully delivered.”

Providing a breakdown of the progress, Umahi explained that Section I (Abuja) and Section III (Kano) are also receiving attention. Julius Berger has already completed substantial portions of the Zaria-Kano stretch, with ongoing works at the Kano end extending to Aminu Kano International Airport—an additional 11-kilometre expansion.

“In total, Sections I and III covering 118 kilometres have been awarded at N252 billion, with solar streetlights mandated across the entire route by presidential directive,” he added.

The ambitious reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway stands as one of the most significant road infrastructure projects in Nigeria, poised to enhance safety, stimulate economic growth, and transform interstate travel in the region.
