The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has praised the Federal Government’s decision to rename the University of Abuja after Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.).
In a statement issued in Kaduna on Tuesday, ACF National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, described the honour as befitting for a “nationalist of exceptional stature” and a symbol of Nigeria’s unity and military professionalism.
“The ACF received the news with delight, honoring our Grand Patron and nationalist icon. General Gowon’s dedication to national unity, development, and education makes him a deserving hero,” the statement read.
The forum noted the timing of the recognition, which coincided with Gowon’s 90th birthday anniversary, as particularly significant.
“It is most commendable that the Federal Government has chosen to honor a national hero while he is alive to appreciate the recognition,” ACF added.
The group urged the National Assembly to expedite the necessary legislative process to formalize the renaming of the university.
General Gowon, who led Nigeria from 1967 to 1975, played a key role in the civil war and post-war reconciliation efforts.
The ACF described the gesture as “a Christmas gift” to the revered leader and applauded the government for acknowledging his contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development.
