The Federal Government of Nigeria has donated N30 million to the family of the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the national flag, two years after his passing.
The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, alongside the Oyo State Director of the agency, Olukemi Afolayan, formally presented the cheque on behalf of the Federal Government at the late icon’s residence in Elebu, Ibadan, on Thursday.
Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, who designed Nigeria’s national flag in 1959, passed away on August 29, 2023, at the age of 87. Following his demise, President Bola Tinubu dispatched a government delegation led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Malagi, on September 4, 2023, to condole with the family. During the visit, the Federal Government pledged to provide financial support and accord the national hero a befitting burial.
Speaking at the cheque presentation, Issa-Onilu emphasized that the donation was not a payment for Akinkunmi’s contributions but a gesture of appreciation for his legacy and service to the nation.
“The donation of N30 million to the family of the renowned National Flag designer is to support his family in recognition of his invaluable contributions to Nigeria,” he stated.
In response, one of the deceased’s sons, Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the Federal Government for the financial assistance and recognition of his father’s legacy.
Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi’s passing and subsequent burial had drawn significant public attention, particularly regarding the delay in the fulfillment of the government’s initial pledge. His funeral eventually took place on September 6, 2024, after a prolonged wait for a state-sponsored ceremony.
The donation reaffirms the Federal Government’s commitment to honoring national icons who have made indelible contributions to the country’s history and identity.
