The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud, has reassured residents of the government’s commitment to their safety and security following the bomb explosion that occurred in the Kuchikuyi community, Bwari Area Council. The incident, which took place on Monday, January 6, 2025, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and heightened concerns across the territory.
During her visit to the scene of the explosion, Minister Mahmoud emphasized the government’s swift response and ongoing efforts to ensure public safety. She urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, calling for collective cooperation with security agencies.
“We understand the fear and concern that recent events may have caused. Please know that the authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all residents,” Mahmoud stated. She added that investigations into the explosion are underway, with heightened security measures now in place to prevent further occurrences.
She appealed to residents to stay informed through verified sources, avoid panic, and foster community support. “During this time, let us remain vigilant but not succumb to fear. Stay informed, cooperate with security agencies, and support one another as a community. Our sympathies go to those affected, and we urge you to remain calm and go about your normal business.”
The minister also highlighted the importance of community vigilance, advising residents to “know your neighbor” as a means of identifying potential threats and ensuring collective safety.
Security Developments and Investigation Updates
The FCT Police Command confirmed that the explosion occurred at approximately 11:00 AM on January 6 at the Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School in the Byazhin area of Kubwa. Three suspects linked to the incident, who reportedly traveled from Katsina to visit the Islamic school’s owner, were killed in the explosion. Authorities have described their presence in the area as suspicious and are investigating their motives.
Accompanying Minister Mahmoud on her visit were top security officials, including the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu; Commander of the Guards Brigade, Brig. Gen. A.O. Onasanya; FCT Sector Commander NSCDC, Olusola Odumosu; Commander of the Naval Unit Abuja, Commodore T.S. Lengaya; Chairman of Bwari Area Council, Hon. John Gabaya; and FCT Director of Security, Mallam Adamu Gwary, among others.
The FCT Police Command assured residents that proactive measures are being implemented to forestall further incidents. Residents are urged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly.
