FCCPC Summons Air Peace Over Alleged Failure to Refund Cancelled Flight Tickets

Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a formal summons to the management of Air Peace Limited following a series of consumer complaints alleging non-refund of ticket fares for cancelled flights.

In a statement released on Monday by the FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, the Commission disclosed that the airline is under investigation for allegedly violating consumer protection laws outlined in the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.

According to Ijagwu, the complaints suggest that Air Peace may have breached Sections 130(1)(a), 130(1)(b), and 130(2)(b) of the Act, which guarantee passengers the right to prompt refunds when bookings are not fulfilled due to the airline’s failure. These provisions are aimed at ensuring fair dealings and protecting consumers from exploitative or unjust practices.

In a summons dated June 13, 2025, FCCPC invoked Sections 32 and 33 of the FCCPA, mandating Air Peace to appear at its Abuja headquarters on Monday, June 23, 2025. The Commission further directed the airline to present key documents including:

A log of refund-related complaints over the past 12 months

Records of all processed refunds

A list of all cancelled flights within the same period

Evidence of remedial actions taken to ease passenger hardship

The Commission warned that failure to comply with the summons could attract stiff penalties, including fines or imprisonment, as stipulated in Section 33(3) of the Act.

This development follows previous scrutiny of the airline by the FCCPC. In December 2024, the Commission had launched inquiries into allegations of exploitative ticket pricing, particularly inflated fares on domestic routes. Air Peace responded by initiating legal proceedings to halt the investigation.

Despite legal resistance, the FCCPC reiterated its commitment to upholding the rights of Nigerian consumers.

“The FCCPC remains steadfast in enforcing the FCCPA and ensuring that service providers, especially in the aviation sector, are held accountable for actions that may exploit or unfairly disadvantage passengers,” Ijagwu said.

As the investigation progresses, all eyes remain on Air Peace’s response and the Commission’s next course of action.
