FCCPC Directs Telecom Operators to Prioritize Service Quality Amid Tariff Adjustments

0

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has mandated telecommunication operators to prioritize improvements in network reliability, speed, and accessibility in light of the recently approved tariff adjustments.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently sanctioned a 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs across the country, citing rising operational costs. However, the FCCPC emphasized that consumer interests must remain a top priority.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Ondanje Ijagwu, FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, the Commission acknowledged the financial pressures faced by telecom operators but stressed that the adjustments should result in tangible benefits for consumers.

“The rationale for the increase must be reflected in better services for consumers,” the statement read, adding that telecommunications are vital for both personal and business purposes.

Call for Responsible Revenue Allocation
The FCCPC urged operators to use the additional revenue responsibly, emphasizing investments in infrastructure and service delivery enhancements. It called for clear mechanisms to monitor how the funds are utilized, ensuring direct benefits for consumers.

Operators were also directed to provide transparent communication about the tariff changes, explaining their purpose, benefits, and alignment with efforts to enhance service quality.

Unified Oversight Framework
The Commission highlighted its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NCC as a unified framework for overseeing the implementation of the tariff adjustments. The partnership aims to prevent exploitative practices while fostering fairness, transparency, and accountability in the telecommunications sector.

“This increase should not serve as a justification for unfair practices. Instead, it presents an opportunity to improve infrastructure and services for the benefit of consumers,” the FCCPC noted.

The directive underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that telecom operators deliver value for the additional costs borne by consumers.
