Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Resolve to Save Lives Nigeria (RTSL Nigeria), a global health organization focused on preventing cardiovascular diseases and epidemic threats.
The appointment was announced on Friday by RTSL Nigeria, which has been actively partnering with governments and communities since opening its Abuja office in 2022.
Reacting to the development, Dr. Tom Frieden, President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives, praised Fashola’s longstanding dedication to public service.
“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Fashola to the RTSL Nigeria Board of Directors. He has demonstrated a commitment to improving lives and livelihoods in Nigeria through more than two decades of public service,” Frieden said.
Fashola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), previously held key national roles including Minister of Power, Works and Housing under President Muhammadu Buhari. He also served as Lagos State Governor from 2007 to 2015, during which he gained international acclaim for his leadership in managing Nigeria’s 2014 Ebola outbreak — a feat that earned him the Stephen J. Solarz Award from the International Crisis Group.
In his remarks, Fashola expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged to contribute meaningfully to the organization’s goals.
“I look forward to helping continue the progress in stopping preventable deaths from cardiovascular diseases and infectious disease outbreaks,” he said.
Ibrahim Abubakar, a fellow board member and Dean of the Faculty of Population Health Sciences at University College London, described Fashola’s appointment as a strategic move, citing his extensive governance background and proven leadership in times of health crises.
With Fashola’s inclusion, RTSL Nigeria strengthens its leadership team as it deepens its impact on public health initiatives across the country
