Family Accuses Owa-in-Council of Extorting for Burial Rites

The family of the late Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II, Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, has accused members of the Owa-in-Council of demanding exorbitant levies for burial rites, contrary to the late monarch’s values of integrity and harmony.

In a statement released on Thursday by Adebayo Adedeji on behalf of the Aromolaran family, the chiefs were accused of imposing frivolous charges and issuing threats to halt traditional rites unless the payments were made. The family described these actions as placing undue pressure on them during an already challenging time.

The statement further detailed that after the payments were made under duress, disputes among the chiefs led to factionalism, complicating the burial process. Some chiefs were also accused of attempting to sabotage events held in honor of Oba Aromolaran, despite prior notification of the plans.

The family emphasized that such actions were in direct opposition to the communal values the late Oba upheld, but affirmed that the Bepo-Aromolaran dynasty remains united in the face of these challenges.
