The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the immediate closure of the runway at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, for emergency repairs following a sudden rupture in the asphalt surface.
In a statement released in the early hours of Saturday, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, said the decision was made in line with aviation safety regulations and to ensure the continued safety of passengers and aircraft operations.
“There is a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway,” the statement noted. “Emergency repairs will be carried out from April 22 to May 6, 2025.”
FAAN confirmed that during the repair period, the runway will be completely closed to all landings and takeoffs. Consequently, all scheduled flights will be diverted to alternative nearby airports.
“As part of FAAN’s commitment to safety and the ongoing modernisation of airport infrastructure, we regret any inconvenience this may cause to passengers and airline operators,” Orah said.
The agency also issued an apology for the short notice, assuring the public that the repair works are being expedited to restore normal operations as soon as possible.
This development comes shortly after Air Peace suspended its operations at the Enugu airport, citing safety concerns.
