In a major political development ahead of the July 12 local government elections in Lagos State, a group of former Labour Party members officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a well-attended mega rally at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, formerly known as Onikan Stadium.
Leading the defectors was Femi Badia, the Labour Party chairman in Apapa Local Government Area, who brought with him several members from Lagos Central into the fold of the ruling APC.
Speaking at the event, Badia said the decision to join the APC was motivated by the impressive developmental strides of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“We are here today to become part of the progressive movement. We have been inspired by the remarkable achievements of President Tinubu and Governor Sanwo-Olu in Lagos. This is our formal declaration of membership and our firm commitment to support President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. I can assure you that we will deliver our polling units come Saturday,” Badia declared.
In a symbolic gesture, Lagos State APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, welcomed the new members with the party’s flag, applauding their decision to align with the ruling party’s vision.
“I congratulate you for embracing the vision of the progressives and aligning with the achievements of our leader, President Bola Tinubu. In the APC, hard work is always recognised. You have chosen to be on the side of progress after witnessing what we’ve accomplished in Lagos State,” Ojelabi said.
With the local council elections just days away, Ojelabi expressed confidence that the APC would record sweeping victories across all 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas in the state.
He further urged party members to reach out to non-Yoruba-speaking residents, encouraging them to support the APC at the polls.
“We started our campaign in peace and we are rounding it off today. We thank God we are alive, hale and healthy,” he added, extending gratitude to party leaders, campaign teams, ethnic groups, and grassroots supporters.
The APC chairman reaffirmed the party’s ongoing door-to-door campaign efforts, particularly acknowledging the contributions of women and youths. He expressed optimism that voters would come out en masse to support the APC on election day for what he described as “a better future.”
