Lokoja was thrown into disarray early Saturday morning as suspected hoodlums attacked the palace of Etsu Lokoja, HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda-Shelika, Nyamkpa IV. The monarch narrowly escaped harm by scaling a fence while his vehicle and other properties were set ablaze.
The attack, which occurred at about 1:00 am at the palace located on Plot 306, New Layout, Lokoja, disrupted preparations for the much-anticipated Lokoja ’24 Nupe Cultural Fiesta. The event, slated for later that day, was canceled as tensions flared.
Narrating his harrowing experience on Monday, HRH Dauda-Shelika said, “At around 1:00 am, I was startled by a loud bang on my door. Looking through the window, I saw flames consuming my car. Realizing the gravity of the situation, I used the back door to escape and scaled the fence to save my life.”
The monarch revealed that neighbors rushed to the scene in an effort to extinguish the fire, but his vehicle and other belongings were completely destroyed.
The Lokoja ’24 Nupe Cultural Fiesta, a gathering aimed at celebrating Nupe heritage, was called off following the attack. Guests from neighboring states who had arrived for the event were left shocked and disappointed.
HRH Dauda-Shelika lamented the cancellation, stating that members of the planning committee had finalized preparations late Friday night, only for the unfortunate incident to derail their efforts.
The Etsu Lokoja appealed to the government and security agencies to investigate the attack thoroughly, stressing the need to identify and prosecute those responsible.
“We appeal to His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, and the security agencies to use their good offices to investigate this incident and ensure justice is served. We must bring those responsible, directly or indirectly, to book,” the monarch stated.
He also called for peaceful conduct among Nupe natives, urging them to avoid reprisals and allow the authorities to handle the matter.
HRH Dauda-Shelika further requested the official recognition and grading of the Etsu Lokoja stool, which he believes will help prevent similar incidents in the future. “This stool has existed long before colonization. Official recognition will address many issues and foster peace,” he added.
Efforts to obtain comments from the police and government officials were unsuccessful as of press time. A police officer stationed at the palace declined to comment, citing a lack of authorization. Repeated attempts to reach the state police command and the governor’s security adviser were also unproductive.
The attack has left the community on edge, with residents calling for swift action to restore peace and prevent further escalation.
