On Sunday, June 18, 2023, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State was present at Wike Nyesom, Governor of Rivers State, residence. In his hometown in Rumueprikom, in the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of the oil-rich South-South state, Wike hosted a Thanksgiving reception at his private home on Ada-George Road.

In attendance were acting governors, former governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives, and other political figureheads. The likes of Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Governor of Lagos State), Seyi Makinde (Governor of Oyo State), Hope Uzodinma (Governor of Imo State), Francis Nwifuru (Governor of Ebonyi State), Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibirin and others attended.

While speaking, the Senate President, Akpabio, thanked Wike for his efforts in making Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC political party emerge the winner at the 2023 Presidential Election. “I want to thank you for all your efforts to bring justice to Nigeria, and I want to especially thank the G-5 Governors,” he said, addressing the five PDP aggrieved governors: Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Nyesom Wike (Rivers).

These governors came together to ally after their party’s presidential primary was won by Atiku Abubakar in May 2022. “We are very delighted and proud to have the G5. Please, ensure that in 2027 another G5 emerges so that APC will continue to do well in this country. And if you like, you can add two more, make it G7 and not only G5,” Senate President Akpabio completed.

After his speech, the other attending Governors also thanked Wike for his generosity and wished him well in the remainder of his tenure.
