In a bold move on Friday, US tech mogul Elon Musk demanded the release of Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s far-right National Rally party, following her controversial court sentencing. Musk, who currently heads the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a post rallying for her release. He echoed the sentiments of former US President Donald Trump, who had earlier criticized the French court’s decision, calling the verdict a “witch hunt” and also demanding Le Pen’s freedom.
The Paris court’s ruling on Monday sentenced Le Pen to four years in prison, with two years of the sentence suspended and the other two to be served under house arrest, monitored by an electronic ankle bracelet. Additionally, the court imposed a restriction preventing Le Pen from participating in France’s 2027 presidential election.
The case has sparked international controversy, with high-profile figures, including Musk and Trump, standing in solidarity with Le Pen, who has long been a divisive figure in French politics.
