U.S. billionaire and tech magnate, Elon Musk, has formally stepped down from his advisory role in President Donald Trump’s administration, marking the end of a controversial but headline-grabbing stint in government.
Musk, who was appointed in November 2024 as a senior advisor and de facto head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), announced his exit in a post on X (formerly Twitter) late Wednesday night.
“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote. “@DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”
His departure comes just hours after Musk publicly criticized the Trump administration’s new tax bill, raising eyebrows in political and economic circles. While he did not cite the bill as the reason for his exit, insiders suggest the timing may not be coincidental.
According to Reuters, Musk left without engaging in a formal conversation with President Trump, signaling a quiet but notable exit from the political scene.
Musk’s role in the DOGE initiative was primarily focused on streamlining federal operations and cutting unnecessary spending — a mission he claims will continue beyond his tenure.
The development adds to the growing list of high-profile figures who have cycled through the Trump administration, leaving behind a mix of innovation, tension, and headlines.
