Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed that he was never a close associate of President Bola Tinubu, stating that his support during the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2022 presidential primaries was solely to ensure power shifted to the South.
Speaking during an interview with Arise TV on Monday, El-Rufai clarified that he was indifferent to who emerged as the APC flagbearer, as long as the candidate was from the South.
“I was indifferent on who became the presidential candidate of APC. The only thing I was determined to do was to stop a Northerner from becoming the candidate of the party based on what I know,” he said.
El-Rufai emphasized that the party had an agreement when it was formed in 2013 that, after President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure, power would shift to the South.
“Tinubu was never my friend, we weren’t close,” he added, dismissing speculations of a personal alliance with the current president.
