A human rights lawyer and counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has sharply criticized the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, for his public praise of Ghana’s recent election, which saw the opposition leader emerge victorious as President-elect.
In a statement released on Monday, Ejiofor expressed disbelief at Yakubu’s comments, questioning his justification for commending the Ghanaian election despite presiding over Nigeria’s controversial 2023 presidential election. The Nigerian election was widely criticized for irregularities and allegations of rigging in favor of the ruling party.
Ejiofor noted that while Ghana successfully conducted an election where the people’s votes were respected and counted, Nigerians are still grappling with the aftermath of the 2023 election, which saw accusations of a “glitch” in INEC’s server that allegedly led to the subversion of the people’s will. The lawyer called on Yakubu to explain the circumstances surrounding the server issue, which many believe undermined the integrity of the election.
“The consequences of that flawed election are evident in Nigeria’s current dire state,” Ejiofor said. “Tragically, those whose mandates were stolen bear the brunt of this crisis, left impoverished and disillusioned.”
Ejiofor concluded by stating that Ghana’s election stands as a model of democratic integrity, contrasting sharply with Nigeria’s election, which he believes has left the country in a state of disillusionment. He called for justice, insisting that history would not be kind to those who betrayed the nation.
