A yet-to-be-identified officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), attached to the Lagos Division, tragically slumped and died in Lagos State on Sunday.
The incident, captured in a video circulating online, shows the lifeless body of the officer surrounded by sympathizers, including police officers. The officers coordinated a search of the deceased’s bag, which revealed his identity card confirming him as an EFCC officer.
In the video, a voice is heard saying, “He works with EFCC. His ID card is with him.”
The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the death on Monday. “Yes, the man is our officer. His death is being investigated. The incident happened on Sunday,” Oyewale said.
This development comes shortly after an EFCC officer, Assistant Superintendent Aminu Salisu, was fatally shot during a raid in Onitsha, Anambra State, on January 15. Salisu and his team, operating out of the EFCC’s Enugu zonal headquarters, were ambushed while attempting to apprehend suspected cybercriminals.
Addressing the recent incidents, Oyewale condemned negative narratives surrounding the officers’ deaths and reassured the public that the EFCC is committed to ensuring justice and accountability.
The circumstances surrounding the Lagos officer’s death remain under investigation.
