EFCC Defends VDM Arrest, Says It’s About Fraud, Not Feud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has called on Nigerians to allow it discharge its statutory responsibilities without undue interference or speculation, following widespread reactions to the arrest of social media personality, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

In an official statement issued on Monday, the anti-graft agency clarified that the ongoing investigation into Otse’s activities is strictly based on multiple petitions alleging financial misconduct, not his vocal criticisms of the Commission.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the exercise of its mandate of tackling economic and financial crimes, invited Martins Vincent Otse owing to a series of petitions bordering on sundry issues of alleged financial crimes raised against him,” the statement read.

The EFCC said the influencer ignored several invitations sent through his known addresses and communication channels, prompting his eventual arrest.

“It is needful to admit that the Commission is aware of several unguarded attacks of the suspect against its operations. While such conduct is condemnable, his arrest was not informed by such attacks,” the EFCC noted.

The agency also confirmed that Otse is in custody under a lawful remand order, and has been granted administrative bail, pending the fulfillment of all conditions for his release.

Emphasizing its commitment to due process, the EFCC urged the public to refrain from drawing premature conclusions about its motives.

“The Commission appreciates the interest of Nigerians in its operations. However, insinuations about its motive in carrying out its assignment should no longer continue. The EFCC should be allowed to do its job without fear or favour. As soon as investigations are concluded, charges will be filed,” it stated.

The Commission reaffirmed that its focus remains the investigation and prosecution of economic and financial crimes, regardless of public sentiment.
